5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Photoshoot

When it comes to showing off your architecture or interior design work, photography is your best friend. A well planned photoshoot will show off your creativity, attention to detail and expertise in space transformation. To make sure the photography process captures your work at its best, here are five tips to help you get the most out of your shoot.

1. Know What You Want

Before the first click, be clear on what you want to achieve with the photos. Ask yourself:

  • Portfolio, social media or publication?

  • Do you want to show off specific details, such as custom millwork or lighting design?

  • Is there a mood or story you want the images to tell?

By sharing your goals with me, they can work to your needs. Clarity at this stage means every shot counts towards your vision.

2. Prep the Space Beforehand

First impressions are everything. To make your project pop:

  • Declutter: Remove everything you don’t need to see.

  • Style the Space: Add fresh flowers, coffee table books or throws to make the space feel lived in.

  • Remove Distractions: Pay attention to outlets, cords or other elements that might detract from the composition.

Work with me on styling details – I may have tips or props to help.

3. Shoot at the Right Time of Day

Lighting is everything. Natural light is often the most flattering so let’s schedule your shoot when the space gets the best light. This might be in the morning for soft light or afternoon for dramatic shadows.

For spaces with no natural light, we’ll discuss how I will light the space to make the final images look great.

4. Prioritize the Key Shots

Not all parts of the project will be equal. Work with me to identify the priority shots that tell the story of your work. This might be:

  • Signature design elements, like a custom staircase or feature wall.

  • Unusual layouts or functions.

  • Before-and-after comparisons if relevant.

By focusing on the high impact areas you’ll make the shoot more efficient and get the best results.

5. Collaborate with Your Photographer

I am your creative partner who brings my own ideas to the table. Be open to suggestions on angles, composition and styling. Share the design intent of the project or any challenges you overcame during the process – I may incorporate those into the story.

If you have specific preferences, let me know early. A little collaboration goes a long way.

Bonus Tip: Align on Post-Shoot Timelines

The process doesn’t end when the shoot wraps. Editing and final delivery are critical steps in bringing your photos to life. Be sure to discuss the post-production timeline with your photographer ahead of time. This ensures you're aligned on expectations, especially if you’re working under deadlines for a launch, presentation, or publication submission.

Clear communication about the timeline and deliverables prevents misunderstandings and ensures your project is showcased exactly when and how you need it.

By following these tips, you can ensure your photoshoot runs smoothly and highlights the full beauty of your work. Great photography is an investment in your brand, helping you attract clients, showcase your skills, and build a standout portfolio.
